Using raw foods to connect to your inner self

Become a Gold Medal Olympian in Healthy Eating

The Olympics have started and after years of training the Olympians have their chance to put all of their training and discipline into the one thing that they have been working towards – Winning a Gold Medal for their country.

The Athletes know exactly what they want – they are focussed and clear. They know they can’t get their Gold on their own and they understand that just having a desire won’t get them their medal.

To support them they have to prepare, they have training schedules in place, nutritionists, coaches and physios to support them and they never lose focus on what they are working towards, even when they feel they can’t be bothered.

I want you to have a Gold Medal in Healthy Eating; I want you to become your own Olympian.

So what can the Olympic events teach you about Healthy Eating:

100 metre sprint: You need to starting ability and acceleration

Starting ability: Any change can be difficult and changing your eating habits can be amongst the most difficult. So when starting a new way of eating you need to be able to clear the initial resistance that you may face from both yourself and those around you.

Maintaining speed: After the initial momentum has got you started it’s important that you keep going and don’t slow down and slip back into your old habits.

Gymnastics: You require flexibility, co-ordination and bounciness.

Flexibility: To try new things and be prepared to make choices that may be different from your friends and family.

Co-Ordination: Being prepared, to ensure you have the right foods in your cupboards to meet your own taste preferences and lifestyle. To plan ahead and co-ordinate your day so that you know you will have food available to you that you want to eat.

Bounciness: To know that even if you binge, or eat foods that you didn’t want to that it doesn’t matter. You can just bounce back and re-set your eating habits.

Wrestling: You need a perfect stance and be skilled at being able to “take down” your opponent

Stance: Knowing yourself and what you need is one of the crucial skills required if you are going to succeed at anything, especially life changes. This is important so that if at any time you lose your way – you know just how to get back on track again.

“Take Down”: Your opponent may come internally in the form of self-doubt or cravings or from pressure from friends and family. It’s important to be prepared for these challenges and have plans in place to deal with the issues that you think may arise.

High Board Diving: You require absolute confidence in your own ability

Confidence: To trust your own inner voice and tune into the needs of your own body and not feel you have to follow some-one else’s idea or ‘right’ eating.

On Your Marks, Get Set and GO!

To start you on your way towards your own Gold Medal in Healthy eating you need to start to add more greens into your diet, not only are they incredibly good for you, they also help to banish unhelpful cravings. An easy way to increase the greens in your diets is to have a green smoothie and this is my favourite one:

Apricot and Blueberry Dream

Ingredients
2 bananas
4 apricots
A handful of blueberries
Peas shoots

Equipment
Blender

Directions
Add the ingredients to your blender and blend until smooth and creamy

Turn Your Shine On

After much blood, sweat and tears – well actually there was no blood, not even a paper cut, I am thrilled to share with you that my first print book is here!

Turn Your Shine On

For over half of my life I had been a yo-yo dieter, but oblivious to the fact. My wardrobe should have been a give-away; my clothes ranged from a UK size 8 to 14! However I managed not to ‘see’ this.
I had tried all sorts of diets, and diets that I believed were natural; I had eaten for my Ayurvedic constitution, I had food combined and un-combined, I had cut out carbs, I had eaten seasonally, I had filled up on the latest ‘superfood’, and had a cupboard full of the latest wonder nutrients.
Yet something still seemed missing, so I just waited for the next book or trend to catch my eye, ready for my next experiment.
Raw foods changed this for me and for the first time I began to understood my relationship with food.
The more I ate ‘clean’ food; foods that are not processed, free of additives and full of nutrients and vitality, the ‘cleaner’ and clearer I became.
Instead of listening to what the latest ‘guru’ advised and hoping that they would provide me with the answer, the clearer my own voice was becoming and I found myself listening to what my body actually wanted. I started eating what I knew to be right for me and not what I thought I should be eating. The results were amazing!

Of course there was weight loss, clear skin and oodles of energy but more than that I felt a deeper connection to myself, and a profound sense of clarity as I moved forward. This opened the way for new experiences and provided me with the confidence to take on bigger challenges.

This led me to create Turn Your SHINE On.
It lets me live my passion; to help people reconnect to their true nature, find their voice and support them take their lives to the next level too and I see food as having a key role in this. The food we eat literally creates us and our experience of the world. With each meal we have we have the opportunity to create our lives and I think this is incredible and very empowering.

Daisy is possibly the youngest reader of my book?

Will you join me in eating more?

One of my intentions for 2012 is to make more of an effort to eat more in harmony with the seasons.

In January foods that are in peak season include:

Delicious Veg:
brussels sprouts, cauliflower, celeriac, celery, chicory, kale, leek and parsnips

Succulent Fruit:
apples, clementines, lemons, oranges, passion fruit, pears, pineapple, pomegranate, satsumas, and tangerines

There are many reasons to make a little effort to see what’s in season in your area:

Shining taste – Nature intended you to eat the food when it is in season, it is at its peak  and even chefs agree that seasonal food tastes better

Shining value – Food in season is cheaper as it has cost less to produce and transport to your local shop – sometimes as much as a third cheaper

Shining planet – Growing and consuming foods in harmony with the seasons requires lower levels of artificial inputs such as lighting and fertiliser and therefore has a lower impact on the planet

Each month I will share with you my favourite recipes that support the seasons. There will be a juice, a smoothie and either a main meal or dessert.

So look out for some tasty recipes each month!

“Could I please have some toast?”

“Could I please have some toast?”

This was the question asked on Sunday morning at the ‘Adventure for the Soul’ retreat that I ran with the beautiful Claire Maguire last weekend.

The answer to the question was of course ‘yes’. This gorgeous lady needed to slow down the processing that she was experiencing and what quicker way to do that than with food?

It’s easy to forget about the power of food and how it affects us. It’s something many of us take for granted as we eat what we want when we want, often giving little thought to the process.

During our three day retreat we serve up wonderful raw food meals, as not only do they taste delicious but they also support the transformational results that we create for our guests.

However, this simple question ‘Could I please have some toast?’, reminded me why our food choices are just so important in creating the life and the results that we want.

It all comes down to energy.

For as long as I can remember I have been aware of energy, vibrations, frequencies – call it what you will, and for over ten years I have been developing this skill to such an extent that I can discover the energetic blocks that are holding people back and then quickly remove them.

People are often fascinated by this and usually shocked at how accurate and how much information I can ‘read’ from someone.

When people ask me to explain how I do it, the best I can come up with is that it’s like picking up on and tuning into the person’s unique frequency. It feels like walking into an atmosphere; like when you walk into a room and see two people who aren’t talking, but you can sense that they’ve just had an argument or when you first meet someone and you ‘just know’ if you will get on with them or not.

Everyone and everything has its own unique frequency, some frequencies are high and others low. The same is true of food.

Most people’s diets consist of wheat with bread and pasta being staples. Often toast for breakfast, a sandwich for lunch and pasta for an evening meal. If you think in terms of colour, these foods are brown and cream. They are stodgy in nature and make you feel full or even heavy or bloated. This frequency is at the lower end of the scale.

At the other end of the scale you have fresh raw fruits and vegetables. If you think in terms of colour these foods are the colours of the rainbow, vibrant and alive. They are fresh and juicy and leave you feeling refreshed and light.

The food you eat becomes you; it creates your experience of the world.

Next time you are walking down the street start to look at people and see if you can tell what frequency of diet they are eating. People who eat lots of bread often look puffy and bloated; just like a loaf of bread. While those who have a tendency for sweets are often more ‘wobbly’ like jelly. And the people who avoid the fruit and vegetable aisle of the supermarket just lack the shine and sparkle of fresh food, often with a ‘washed out’ look about them.

We all need food to live and with every meal you eat, you get to choose what kind of life, body and experience you create.

Sometimes you need foods with a lower vibration, foods that slow you down. This can be particularly relevant if you are experiencing events that are overwhelming you and you want to, albeit subconsciously, numb or stuff the feelings down.

However there will be times in your life when you want to up your game and take your life to the next level, and when this is the case you can support yourself by eating foods at the higher end of the spectrum. Foods that will help you raise your vibration include fresh raw and living foods.

Many people think raw and living foods are good for you because they contain more vitamins, minerals and enzymes etc. I believe it’s in their frequency; it’s the magic of nature.

Food – Are you on a high or a low

Our relationship with food, is at best complex.

Over the years I’ve worked with hundreds and hundreds of women, and each one of them at some point in their life had an issue with food or their body image.

In fact most of these women had put their life on hold whilst they battled with their weight, saying that they would make their next move, take the next opportunity etc… once they got to their magic dress size or lost a certain amount of weight.

Can you relate to this?

Shining Challenge

I want you to think back over your life and chart the Highs and Lows of your relationship with food.

  • Get a large piece of paper and along the bottom of it put the years or your different ages, then up the left hand side of the page write the word ‘high’ at the top and ‘low’ at the bottom.
  • Then scan throughout your life and mark on particular highs and lows that you’ve experienced over the years.
  • As you look at your chart do any of your highs or lows with food coincide with events in your life or perhaps different diet plans that you have followed?

If yours looks anything like mine does it will have its highs and lows, in fact mine looks like a very exciting roller coaster ride!

If like I was, you’re ready to get off this rollercoaster I have the perfect announcement for you…

I’m delighted to let you know that it’s finally Ready!

My new Step Up, Clean Up program is ready.

This is a 30 day program where you will shape up your body, your life and get your future in order.

Make your own raw food rules

One thing has struck me recently and that is how many people are concerned with numbers. Well to be exact it’s - percentages.

What percentage of raw food should I be eating, what percentage of fats, greens and fruit should I be eating.

It’s not just food where we aspire to conform to the ‘perfect’ number, but I’ve also been hearing many people talk of dress sizes; ‘Oh I know I will be happy when I get to size 12, 10, 8…’

But in truth do the numbers really matter to you?

If so why?

What will that magic number bring you, how will your life be different, what will you be able to do that you can’t do now?

In relation to food, I think, and this is my personal opinion, that it is more important to find out what works for you. That’s right you know your body better than anyone else and it’s up to you to learn what works for you.

It’s great to read other people ideas and how certain food combinations, diets etc worked for them. But remember their way worked for them, and their unique body, lifestyle and history.

What works for you one year, or even one day will change as your body changes and the demands placed on your body change.

So it’s much more important to have a healthy relationship with food and not be rigid in your thoughts and behaviours towards it.

In relation to your body, it’s brilliant! Bodies are amazing, they do many incredible things for us, day in and day out, sure they get tired sometimes, but enjoy your body and your life, just don’t fall into the trap of putting everything on hold until you reach that magic number/dress size.

Does it really matter if you go swimming/wear a pair of shorts/play tennis and your don’t look like a super model, will anyone really care in a week’s time, will they even remember? The answer is no – so why hold back and miss out on something that you enjoy.

Whilst it’s true that we can learn much from other people and their experiences, it is much more important to make your own rules and be true to yourself.

Unique is so much better than bland – just ask your taste buds!

So do I recommend 100% raw and do I think you should be a certain dress size to be happy and gorgeous? Absolutely not! You are perfect just the way you are, gorgeous just the way you are and when you accept this you will realise how much truth is in this statement, you can take your life off hold and embrace the magic that life has to offer!

I believe that raw food is the most amazing tool that can help you get back in touch with your body, what it needs and how it responds, I also believe that it can have a much deeper impact on your life as it really allows you to connect to yourself on a deeper level.

But does that mean I think you should eat 100% raw all the time – No, would be my answer to you. I see too many people get really upset because they have fallen of the ‘band wagon’ or add incredible amounts of pressure for them to remain 100% raw or even missing out on social occasions because they don’t want to be tempted…

Food is one aspect of your life – a very important aspect, but it should be enjoyed and not feared.

Food should be celebrated and not full of shame.

If you do want to add more raw foods to your diet, and we’re not talking percentages, remember these important tips:

  • Learn what works for you
  • Get organised
  • Learn to love and accept yourself just as you are
  • The choices you made yesterday, create the experiences you are living today

So do the numbers matter to you – comment below to share your thoughts – I look forward to hearing your views…
